Rx7 Sports Car
Not many Japanese cars have captured the imagination quite like the Wankel-powered Mazda RX7.
Some of that attention can be credited to popular video games and Hollywood, as the tuner car culture rose to prominence in the late 90s and entered the mainstream media. So although these sports cars were reaching their twilight, they were affordable, fun, and a lot of the attention was merited.
It isn't all about the distinctly 90s looking 3rd generation RX7 though, all too often people forget the fact that the first generation cars even exist, let alone the fact that they were arguably better than the final evolution of this Wankel legend.
10 First Launched In The 70s
The first cars rolled off the assembly line all the way back in 1978, considering the cars that were being produced back then this was a huge step in the right direction.
Although fuel economy was nothing to write home about, it delivered a smooth 100 horsepower in a significantly lighter car.
9 13B Rotary Engine Produced For 30 Years
Introduced in 1982, only first generation cars sold in North America got these engines, likely due to the strict emissions regulations implemented back then.
It was the beginning of something of a dynasty for Mazda, as these engines went into hundreds of thousands of rotary cars over the years, giving birth to an endless aftermarket for this particular engine even after it was phased out in 2002.
8 Maintenance Heavy Cars
One thing that Wankel engines all have in common is apex seals, these little guys protect the engine from unnecessary wear by allowing a thin film of oil to be present in the combustion chamber.
As a result, oil consumption is high, with cars being known to consume up to a liter of oil for every 1000 miles. Service intervals are also far shorter, with the oil filters, oil and fuel filters all needing to be changed every 3000 miles!
7 Named Import Of The Year Twice
Not always a good gauge for cars, but in a period when Japan dominated car sales in North America this is something worth noting.
It sure wasn't for its reliability or affordability. It was named that because of their willingness to innovate and overall drivability.
6 First Mass Produced Car With Sequential Turbos
It was way back in 1986 the Porsche 959 pioneered sequential turbocharging, but it took Mazda to bring that technology to the average consumer.
In-so-doing they took a leap ahead of the competition, eliminating the dreaded turbo-lag that was so prevalent back in the early 90s.
5 Rich Motorsport History
Today, when you see an RX7 the first thing that will come to mind is drifting, such is the popularity of the vehicle in those circles.
It didn't start that way though, Mazda started by entering it into the WRC and several endurance races including the prestigious Le Mans. Many amateur race drivers still make use of the relatively affordable RX7 platform today, appearing in more IMSA races than any other car.
4 Hugely Popular With Tuners
Its popularity in racing circles helped establish a solid aftermarket, making it one of the more affordable cars to modify with a long list of bolt-on components yielding big horsepower gains.
Cars with simple bolt on modifications can make as much as 400 horsepower, even more with some other changes, like replacing the sequential turbos with a single, larger turbo. Although much horsepower can be made, it will be at the expense of much turbo lag, reliability and something that makes the car rather unique in the first place.
3 Apex Seal Failure
One common misconception with apex seals, thanks in part to the spectacularly unreliable RX8 (above) and internet forums, is that apex seals will fail all the time.
If they are maintained the way Mazda rather conservatively stipulates, the seals will last over 100,000 miles. In the real world, not everyone understands just how different these engines are and if they maintain it like a conventional engine they will fail a lot sooner, if performance upgrades are done, sooner still.
2 Engine Rebuilds Are Common
When the time comes to replace the apex seals, it isn't a small job, it will require a full engine rebuild and that doesn't come cheap.
As such engine rebuilds are common, if the job was done well and the maintenance intervals are followed there should be no cause for concern.
1 First Generation Offers Better Value
Although by far the least popular, they are also the cheapest and most plentiful, especially in North America, out of the 470,000 cars Mazda made almost 380,000 landed in the US!
All the better if it has the 13B engine, with the extensive aftermarket they are a fun, affordable option compared to the 3rd generation cars that demand a premium (or are basket cases) and the slightly heavier 2nd generation cars that are arguably less attractive.
